Now that Rick Lazio is officially the Senate nominee of New Yorks Republican Party, he has drawn even with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in a Portrait of America telephone survey. 40% of New Yorks likely voters say that they will vote for Lazio while 39% will vote for Clinton.
Just before Guiliani dropped out of the race, the largely unknown Lazio trailed by 21 percentage points. On the day after Lazio became the apparent nominee, he trailed by 11 percentage points.
Still, Lazio is far from well known. 44% of New Yorks voters still dont know enough about him to have a favorable or an unfavorable opinion. 38% have a favorable view and 18% an unfavorable view.
43% have a favorable view of Clinton and 40% say they have an unfavorable view of her. Those numbers are down significantly from the last two surveys. While Guiliani was still in the race, 54% had a favorable view of her and 34% an unfavorable view. On Lazios first day as her opponent, 48% had a favorable view and 39% an unfavorable view. Those polls were conducted shortly after the first lady was formally nominated.
