Hillary’s Calls

Documents Show Hillary Clinton Was Active in Dialing for Dollars

6/19/00 - Hillary Clinton was active from the earliest days of the campaign fund-raising scandal seeking donors who could give big bucks to her husband’s reelection-campaign committee and the Democratic National Committee, or DNC, as Insight reported earlier (see Insight Online at http://www.insightmag.com).

The latest document to come to Insight’s attention is an undated memo believed to be from 1996 in which an unknown writer at the White House summarized notes on a high-level meeting to discuss the need for the DNC to generate millions of dollars to help repay huge debts incurred by the Democrats.

The memo states: "DNC out of money, can’t generate revenues to meet expenses." It says the DNC has "borrowed $3.5 million" and has "debt of $5.0 mil projected by year’s end." The handwritten memo points out that "BC [Bill Clinton] made 15-20 calls – raised $500k" and that "HRC making calls."

While it is well known that Hillary Clinton was intimately involved in many aspects of White House operations, her actual role in dialing for dollars on behalf of the Clinton/Gore reelection committee and the DNC has been overlooked by most.

But federal investigators looking into the campaign fund-raising scandal now say Hillary is turning up in the various memos to and from federal agents and prosecutors investigating the campaign scandals. Nonetheless, Mrs. Clinton’s intimate role has been overlooked by congressional hearings and in news stories.

Now that she’s running for the open U.S. Senate seat in New York, investigators are beginning to review the thousands of pages of documents obtained by the FBI Campaign Task Force and congressional investigators to look for clues about Mrs. Clinton's shadowy role in the campaign scandal. No one contacted by Insight believes Hillary will become a target of federal prosecutors so long as Janet Reno remains attorney general.

At the same time, according to federal and congressional investigators, neither the press nor the public has focused on her role in the scandal which, based on an ongoing review of the records, was quite substantial.

As with the previous memo unearthed by Insight, here’s another memorandum noting Hillary’s previously underreported role in the scandal that federal agents continue to pursue. The press should be asking: "What did she know and when did she know it?"
